Well, Peter Jackson made his first feature on a 16mm clockwork Bolex, so it's certainly doable. Just a bit of a pain.

Unfortunately it's very difficult to get a shallow depth of field with a camcorder. One option is to get a 35mm lens adapter and then use still camera...

I haven't used After Effects myself (I use eyeon Fusion for effects), but you should be able to do all those kind of things with some work.

From what I've heard, this hasn't been true since the 1990s; certainly I swapped tapes all the time in my TRV900 and never really had any problems.
