I've finished the 6 week filmmaking course. I can recommend it if you want to get your first little film done and learn some basics. Be aware though that the teachers are sometimes students themselves (at AFI or so) and that the school is a little chaotic. The school doesn't have a very good alumni. The equipment is soso and make sure you are not in a college kids class if you intend to make films. Those kids just waste their parents money by running around like idiots at the Universal lot.

"I took the 2 year filmmaking and directing course. I must admit, the first couple of weeks was very intimidating - trying to learn so much so fast really made me realize how little I actually knew about filmmaking. Once I got over the insecurities and comfortable with the equipment and projects there was no turning back! I loved every minute of the program - it was a complete immersion in the filmmaking world. The instructors, facility and equipment were top notch. The program challenged every part of me - my creativeness, work ethic, dedication, people skills, management abilities and ability to make decisions. NYFA forced me to become a better filmmaker, and I did. I would rate this school as one of the very best without hesitation. "

I am extremely busy with my courses because of the high intensity, but enjoying myself and learning so much about filmmaking!!

NYFA is focused on projects-based, 'learn-by-doing' technique which would prove to be a solid foundation for film-making in general.

I completed the 1yr film making(Directing) program over a year ago. I would recommend this school to anyone that truly has a passion to make films. But saying that, your experience highly depends on your peers in the school. Luckily my class (of 15 other guys and 1 guy) was very passionate. Your classmates are your crew as you are also theirs. This place is extremely hands on and you HAVE TO rely on you classmates. You learn an incredible amount in a short time and the teachers are very knowledgeable. It's very expensive and other than the basic equipment you have to pay for anything and everything that you want for your shoots.(i.e., locations, props, film, ect.) It is two semesters long and my advise to anyone on a budget is take the first semester(you learn more than you would in 4yrs at some film schools) but don't take the second(it's mostly review and then you spend the rest of the time creating a thesis project) instead take the 15 grand you would of spent and make a really amazing short. Lastly don't be fooled by the Universal backlot crap. It's a great marketing technique but that's about it. You go out on extremely short notice and everyone in the school is there fighting for space and there's no way you can shoot sound with 100+ students shooting right next to you. Same goes for part about the 35mm camera 1 week x 1 camera x 1 classroom x 17 people fighting over it=not worth it. Good luck.
