Description

This hands-on 2 week workshop is for reporters, photojournalists, photographers, reporters, media producers, scientists, adventurers and other professionals who want to create their own news stories and documentaries using the newest HD Digital Video cameras and editing software to tell stories, cover news and create short documentaries for webcasting. We begin with an introduction to “Cinematic Storytelling”, incorporating camera controls for various HD cameras, including on-board menus, lenses and accessories, microphones, camera handling and basic lighting techniques. We cover composition for the moving image, POV, scene structure, shot sequences, continuity and eyelines. You will learn how to set-up and light an interview, record sound and come back with sufficient B-roll material to tell your story during editing. The course covers story structure for television news, longer form documentaries and web based newspapers. We cover programme formats, research, writing, interview techniques and field production. We will screen and analyze a variety of news clips and documentaries, studying structure, style, content, dramatic effectiveness and the impact of editing. We begin with a series of exercises to help you become familiar with the cameras and storytelling process. When you are comfortable you conceive a story, prepare, shoot, edit and present a 3 to 8 minute television news feature, documentary or personality profile. The Faculty will follow you through the process, with in-depth and meaningful critiques. When you leave you will feel comfortable with the cameras, the storytelling process and career options.
