Description

OPENChannel presents “The Flicks” a series of monthly film nights exploring the history and theory of cinema from the comfort of the OPENChannel lounge. Enjoy regular films screenings and discussion led by a range of engaging & knowledgeable film enthusiasts on the first Monday of every month in 2005.

On July 4th at The Flicks, Cinema Studies Lecturer, Lisa French will explore how we make meanings from films and what we do when we interpret them. Using two very different short films, Lisa will explore two approaches to film which have always been viewed as polar opposites – interpretation on the one hand and experience, aesthetics and emotional response on the other.

The two films to be screened are Albie Thoms’ kinetic handmade scratch film, Bluto (Australia,1967, 5 mins.) and Jackie Farkas’ postmodern experimental short Amelia Rose Towers (Australia, 1993, 10 mins.).

ABOUT LISA FRENCH:
Lisa French lectures in Cinema Studies and Communication at RMIT University. She has previously been the Director of the St Kilda Film Festival for 3 years, directed the ATOM Awards for 3 years, and worked for the Melbourne International Film Festival.
