straight 8 is a filmmaking event with a difference. it happens all over the world, nearly. we’ve also made tv programmes.
you, the filmmaker, shoot a film on a single cartridge of super 8mm film that we send to you. you can only edit in-camera. then you hand back your un-developed film to us for processing. together with an original soundtrack
the first time you see your film is with a packed cinema audience
sounds fun? it is. sounds scary? it is
you have to follow the rules. carefully
here’s an abridged version
the rules
the film we send you is the actual one you shoot and we show. if it’s good enough
the projectionist will simply play your soundtrack when he sees the first frame of your film. no written instructions to our projectionist allowed – it is very dark in there. he doesn’t care anyway. well, he does. a lot actually. but you get the idea
in the unlikely event that your film does become lost or damaged we will only be able to replace your film. we will not be able to refund your production costs: the star talent, thousands of extras, catering, and so on
also deadlines are just that: dead lines. they are strict. miss them and miss out. see the events page for current deadlines
copyright. we are proper-strict about this
you need to create original sound and/or music and get clearance from any actors/performers who feature in your film and sound. we will send you a release form and all the wording will be there – you need to follow it to the letter
make the films you want. because that’s what straight 8 is all about. we do reserve the right not to screen films we consider to be seriously offensive or defamatory. but we are open-minded too
we love the fact we get entries about all different stuff from all over the world from people of all different backgrounds. that’s why we never set themes
this is all about you making the film you want to make. because if you’ve got a film in you, we want to see it
films will be screened at the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival Friday June 22 and also at the Cannes Film Festival (date TBA)
