An advanced class in the creative use of lighting techniques for feature films and HD. This is an advanced course for DPs, cinematographers, gaffers and freelance filmmakers who want to explore dramatic lighting techniques for feature films, commercials and television. Through lectures, screenings and discussions, we will cover the importance of light in telling a story, providing a context for the week’s work. You will shoot tests on a variety of film stocks, with HD cameras, then from prepared scripts, draw-up lighting plots for various situations, as well as shoot a variety of scenes and exercises to expand your technical knowledge and visual aesthetic. You will have the opportunity to light scenes, use a combination of natural light, HMI, tungsten and fluorescent lights in a series of exercises; scenes may include bedrooms, car interiors, day and night, street scenes and dramatic situations with actors. This is a practical, hands-on workshop dealing with professional standards and equipment on locations and on a sound stage. You will solve technical, story and artistic problems and direct the crew. We will shoot each scene and lighting exercise on digital still cameras, 16mm film and with HD cameras. Each exercise will be analyzed the following morning.
