The Balkan Black Box Festival, taking place now in its 7th year in Berlin, is devoted to all aspects of culture in the post-socialists countries of South Eastern Europe. It is open to all works which deal thematically with the region and give new insights into its history and contemporary life. The festival features internationally recognized high end productions, but it also aims to give the young and rising generation of filmmakers a platform for presenting their works.
This year’s film section will feature film awards for feature films, documentaries and short films. The awards in all categories will be awarded to films according to film-aesthetic quality and originality, thematic interest, and dramatic structure.
Applications can be made by sending the submission form available from the festival website at http://www.balkanblackbox.de
Eligibility is subject to the following conditions:
• The film release date must be in 2004 or 2005.
• The country of origin must include one of the following countries (co-productions with other countries are possible): Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia.
• The film has not been released for cinematic distribution within Germany. (The film may, however, have been screened at festivals or special screenings in Germany.)
• Films must be full-length feature films, documentaries or short films to be eligible to the film prize in the respective categories.
Submissions must be accompanied by a videotape (VHS-PAL) or a SVCD or DVD (PAL) including English or German subtitles, film description and press kit.
If the film is selected for the competition, the festival expects to be sent a Beta SP tape (subtitled) with shipping charges to Germany carried by the sender. Tapes will be returned after the festival with shipping charges carried by the festival. If German- or English-language subtitled 16mm or 35mm copies are available, the festival may carry shipping costs in both directions, depending on the availability of funds; in order to apply for adoption of shipping costs in this case, the sender must indicate the availability of a photographic (16mm or 32mm) copy in the submission form.
Submissions should be sent to:
