COMPETITION: ‘Imagination Series’ with Oscar-Winning Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, Tribeca Film Festival, and Bombay Sapphire

Author: Benjamin Craig

Iconic gin brand Bombay Sapphire has launched the ‘Imagination Series’ in association with the Tribeca Film Festival, a global film competition offering budding filmmakers the chance to make their own short film with imagination at its heart.

In partnership with Oscar-Winning Screen Writer, Geoffrey Fletcher (“Precious”), the global competition will be based on a specially commissioned script written by Geoffrey, which will form the basis of the short film. Budding filmmakers from around the world can view Geoffreyʼs script at www.imaginationseries.com and submit their imaginative interpretation of his script, through words and images. The competition will close on Wednesday 1 August and then a global judging panel (including Geoffrey and industry experts from the Tribeca Film Institute) will select five winners from a shortlist of entries in September. The winners will go on to direct their own short film, which will be launched at exclusive international screenings in early 2013.

In preparation for the global competition, Bombay Sapphire conducted a survey of more than 3,000 members of the international film industry* in March 2012 which revealed that 81 per cent of those surveyed believe that mainstream audiences now have a passion for more imaginative films, sighting the 2012 multi Oscar award-winning film ʻThe Artistʼ as inspiration. Whatʼs more, two-thirds of those surveyed felt that there was a shortage of original screenplays hitting cinemas, with big film franchises being favoured. Oscar-Winning Screen Writer Geoffrey Fletcher comments on his role within The Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series and the script he has written, “The power of imagination is endless, which is why Iʼve developed a script that I feel can be interpreted in a kaleidoscope of ways. The short script I wrote for The Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series is stripped of details like character description and locations. It leaves room for filmmakers to interpret parts of the story as they wish. The characters can be human or otherwise. The locations can be of this earth or
elsewhere. The types of filmmaking can be live action, animation, drawings or whatever form best expresses their concept.”

The Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series global film competition is intrinsically linked to imagination, which is at the heart of the iconic gin brand. (Bombay Sapphire has long supported the world of creativity, design and imagination starting with its iconic blue bottle and the sourcing of its 10 exotic botanical ingredients from around the world to create its unique taste). This is the first year Bombay Sapphire has partnered with the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival to amplify its ‘Infused with Imagination’ campaign message and further celebrate the brandʼs belief in the power of imagination. The partnership will continue for the next two years.
