I saw an indie film featurette (title was "11:14") where they were using wireless LCD displays, perhaps 10 inches in size, with antennas, to monitor what the camera was seeing. I can not find those anywhere. Does anybody know more what those are, where to get them, what they might cost? Functionality?

Any small monitor will work, even a portable DVD player. I use the Sony GV-D1000 because it also records to MiniDV which can be nice for quick review. It runs in the $1,000 range.

You get the video from the camera to the display with a wireless system. I use the Premier BE-450 (or BE-500) wireless (microwave) video transmitter/receiver which runs in the $4,500 to $6,000 range so it?s always a rental for me.

I don't understand your question "Functionality?" Are you asking if the monitor and wireless system works?

I think in terms of whether it offers anything over a normal wired monitor set up. I guess it varies with the fluidity of your project- if your location allows you to have the static nature of a wired monitor, then that might be your best bet, whereas for fast moving documentary shooting wireless would be the way to go...

Functionality in terms of does having an additional monitor, wired or wireless, actually add to the value of the crew in making the film and in what way. Is it just fun gizmo eye candy, or is it actually practical and in what way? I would guess, not having done actual filming yet ?yeah i am a total newb :(?that the usefulness would be to review a scene while actors and lighting are still on set???

For me, the location doesn't come into the decision. If the camera is on a steadicam then the operator doesn't want cables attached to the camera. And I (the director) still want to see what the shoot looks like without rewinding and reviewing. So in that case a wireless monitor is functional.

In my experience there really isn't any piece of equipment that is "eye candy" - especially equipment that costs 4 to 5k or rents for $300/wk. Very few filmmakers can afford to have a piece of equipment on the set simply for the purpose of showing off. Even the big budget "Hollywood" shows.

I'm not suggesting that you can't make a movie if you don't have c-stands, flags, scrims or a taco cart - you can. I'm just saying that there is nothing on a set that is there for "eye candy".
