i am using .45 automatic bullet casings (just the casings, no primer, powder or bullet) and require them to smoke REALISTICALLY for around 10-15 seconds
all my attempts with matches, sandpaper, cigarettes, plastic, aluminium, stocking fabric and cotton wool have failed
the main problem seems to be running out of air too fast
anything about how to make them smoke successfully would be appreciated - prefferably soon as they are required on set in a week ?:0? !

What do you mean by 'smoke realistically'? Admittedly I've never looked for it, but I've never noticed real cases smoking for 10-15 seconds after firing.
My guess would be either cut out a hole in the casing so you can feed smoke in from outside through a tube, or do it in post with a particle effects program that will give you complete control over what the smoke looks like.
Casings don't really smoke, not that I've noticed. But if that's the effect you really want I would suggest a drop or two of dry-ice combined with water might create a wift of 10-15 second stuff that looks like smoke.
Baring that you might simply freeze water inside the case. If you then film out in the sun the water should evaporate and give you a little bit of smokey looking condensation.
Another possibility is to return to the match idea. Hold the casing so that the hole is down. light a match or two and put them inside the casing so that the smoke accumulates as much as possible. Film the casing as it hits the pavement. Some smoke should survive long enough to puff out as the casing hits the ground.

Incense might work too.
