Hi there!
So I'm new to filming things and I'm kind of learning as I go. Last week, for the first time I recorded audio for this staged play reading with me and this other actress. I used a Zoom H4N and a Rode NTG2. I noticed once I put it on my Macbook that there is a lot of background noise. Is this typical for this condenser microphone? I checked the levels and made sure it was around -12db or so. The thing is I didn't have a sound guy so I just left the microphone sitting on a chair. We weren't filming a real scene so it doesn't matter that the mic was caught on camera. Also, it was a small indoor rehearsal room and maybe the sound was bouncing off the walls? Could those be factors to why I was hearing this low volume hum throughout? Also, what do you guys recommend for when I shoot a skit for real, maybe a lavalier mic? Thanks!
The key to good sound is to get close to your source. If you can cut the distance in half between the microphone and the person talking, you can get 4x clearer audio.
The NTG1 and NTG2 aren't particularly outstanding microphones, but you should still be able to get a good sound from one. Do you have the compressor/limiter turned off on your recorder?
