I guess it all depends on your belief system, but I'm superstitious, so I thought I'd get the input from the (regular) members of this forum.

Summer Glau is a shapely, talented actress, but every TV series that she's appeared in as a regular or semi-regular has been cancelled. So this has led many on the web to ask if there is a Summer Glau curse.

CI, any thoughts?

Another way to ask the question is how does she continually get cast into tv series that not only get out of the pilot stage but last a year or two. A think a lot of actors might be envious of that record.

Good point. And she is a ballet dancer, so that's quite an athletic achievement.

I got nothin'

Not the superstitious type. I find it impossible to think that by hiring her
the entire company - producers, writers, directors, grips, costumers,
editors - may be in any way cursed. Lot's of TV series are canceled. In
fact ALL of them are. Every series Ted Danson has appeared in as a regular
or semi-regular has been cancelled. Every series Tom Sellick appeared in
as a regular or semi-regular has been cancelled. Every series Lucille Ball
appeared in as a regular or semi-regular has been cancelled. All cursed?

Still an interesting idea to talk about. But I am superstitious. But, as mentioned by RJ, she has a track record of being hired.

But the thing with the curse, so-called, is that all her series have been cancelled after one or two seasons. And the fun part is, of course, dissecting it, to see if there's anything there.

I'm more statistical than superstitious. I can't even see how the belief that
things such as magic or luck (or unluck) has anything to do with this. I
suspect you could find many lesser known actresses who have had several
series cancelled after only one or two seasons. There are far more series
that get cancelled after one or two seasons than go to four or five - far, far,
far more. But of course "many on the web" only talk of "popular" or "cult"
actresses so these names are not brought into the statistical picture.

I wonder; would any actress (or actor) who had, say, three, series cancelled
after one or two seasons have a curse on them? And is the curse lifted once
their next series goes to season four?

OK, if she gets a series that lasts four seasons, then the curse is lifted.

This is a good discussion.

What lifts a curse?

You're superstitious. If you were putting together a series right now and
her agent wanted her in your series and offered her for less than her
quote would you hire her? You feel now that she might be cursed. Is
the curse something from outside? Is this some misfortune attached to
her? Has some entity made this happen to her? Does a curse like this
follow her for all time?

As a superstitious person (and producer) could you even hire her? At
what point do you know - know for sure - that the curse has been lifted?
Only AFTER she has been on a show that lasts four seasons?

Now what happens if during the forth season one of the crew gets into
a car accident and can no longer continue working on the show? Is that
attributed to the Summer Glau curse? What if it's a lead actor? What if
she drops out during the forth season for no public reason?

I'm curious as to how far this curse is taken.

What lifts a curse? I have no idea. But, as for lifting that curse, my test is if she can land a series that lasts four seasons.

But I am superstitious, so, if I was to be lucky enough to have a TV series, as I hope to do so one day, then I would give second thoughts about her. Look at it this way, if I can find another actress of equal ability, I would hire that actress and play it safe. LOL.

So you will leave it another producer to "break" the curse. You would
not take the chance.

Just for fun:

You are producing a sci-fi series - fully funded by a major prodCo with
interest from two major networks and three cable stations. Glau's agent
contacts you - she is perfect for the lead. You think so, she thinks so; so
much so that she is willing to cut her fee in half for the first three seasons.
The funders agree, the stations agree. There is an unknown actress of
equal ability but the stations do not want her. It comes down to your
decision as the creator/producer of the series to make the call. The funders
will back you no matter what. The TV stations may drop out.

Do you not hire Glau because of your superstition? Do you put that aside
and hire her?

LOL, good one, CI. I would ask the stations to go with the unknown actress, but, if they insist on Summer, then I would have to follow their wishes, because they're funding it partly.

And then I would get some shamans to do something - anything - to break the curse.
