In the fall, I will be starting a group at my University that will be, essentially be a production company and will be making movies, from pre-production through the finished project. We are planning to make 15-20 minute movies, and have no equipment, but we have yet to discuss budget with the school. We have everything we need for pre- and post-production, but nothing for the production phase.

What sort of equipment should we get our hands on, specifically? I know the basics of what to get our hands on:
Camera
Lighting Equipment
Tripod
Dolly
Film Slate

As for specifics however, I am unsure what our group will need. I have never made a true movie before, only 3-5 minute shorts that did not need a true film set's equipment set. What else do you suggest I get for the set?

Because I know someone else will say it, you should also invest in some good sound equipment. 🙂

Yep. It's interesting that you don't mention audio at all.

The minimum equipment I would suggest having on hand is:
a tripod
6 lights with stands
2 china balls
8 extension cords
6 power strips
black wrap and gels
2 bounce boards
a good shotgun mic
a boom with extension cables
a simple grip kit with:
c-stands (at least 6)
flags (assorted sizes - at least 8)
scrims (at least 6)
silks (at least 2)
cookies (at least 1)
sandbags (one for every light/c-stand and then 6 more)
gaffers tape
a bunch of C-47s
a coffee maker
a slate with marker

"a bunch of C-47s"

I have always wondered where does the name come from. Wikipedia has no authoritative answer, and I couldn't find it elsewhere. A simple wooden clothespin...

Oh, THAT's what those are! Why would you need clothespins on set... hanging gels? Provided they don't you know, combust (haha!), I could see that being useful in that way; we couldn't figure out how to hang our gels on our lights.
