Hey, i'm acting in an action movie, but theres one small problem. My Character is a smoker. I personally have never smoked, and would really like to not smoke. Aside from the real cigarettes, are there fake or "stage cigarettes" i could get? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -Dean

I've seen some fake cigarettes at the Halloween store that smoke like a real cigarette but arn't. I don't know how well they work or what not but it might be something to look into.

If you can't find those fake cigs and your roll is a good one, I suggest just not inhaling the smoke. It's really easy to fake.

There are fake cigarettes. Remember the Smoking Man in X files? Not a smoker. He smoked herbal cigarettes. Not sure where to get them, but I'd start by calling some of the major prop houses in LA or NY.

I guess it depends on how hardcore you get when your acting. I was in a play and my character smoked too, and anyone that smokes for real will be able to tell if you aren't inhaling cuz when you actually smoke, you can inhale, say a line or two, then exhale. If you just let the smoke sit in your mouth, you don't have the slow control you have when actually exhaling. It does look different. There are so many maneurisms (sp?) that smokers have that when you can't be natural, they pick up on it.

I'm somewhat into "method acting" but only practically. If you decide to inhale (real or herbal) and you rehearse and get used to it, you'll know what I mean.

Advice: If you get real cigs (depening on the look the director wants them to be i.e. white with brown filter...) get the lightest they make, and then buy a pack of whatever your director wants and put the lights in there. You don't want the nicotine rush and imo an action dude wouldn't be smokin' lights so you gotta have a non-lights pack. Do the same thing for the herbals too. Either way (herbal/real) start getting used to them. If you know people that smoke, take smoke breaks with them so you can pick up on their habits and gestures and so on. You don't want to be smoking like a girl does, or whatever. For every type of character there is a different "smoking style".

With that in mind, I chose to really smoke and it made it so much more real in that when people smoke, it is an extension of them, their hand, their gestures and so on. If you can get a hold of herbal cigs (gas stations around here) all the better, but they smell horrible in my opinion.

I am too into being in shape to have gotten addicted over the 3 month run of the play, so for me it was just another prop.

Sorry so long winded, just tryin to help.

Sorry, one more thing.

Since my character was an action guy, I simply watched movies that had characters that were kinda like mine. I know Vin Deisel isn't getting any oscars, but in "Knock Around Guys" he smokes and it was exactly the kind of smoker I needed to emulate.

OK, I'm done, I promise.

dont get those toy cigs, you have to blow to have smoke come out, and if you want a real shot of you like smoking, but not smoking with the smoke coming out of you mouth get some nicoteen free ciggs.

salem lights - nicotine free

i wouldnt mind smoking a real one, one or two cigarettes or even 5 wont killo you, hell, it wont make you addicted, even if you inhale.

im all good wit dat.
