Hi there peeps

I have a question about sound if i may. I've been told that in order to get proffessional quality sound, i should record via a sound mixer which would be plugged into the dv camera

unfortunately the person didn't tell what kind of sound mixer to use

so my question is, what is a good model of sound mixer.. or what features should i be looking out for..

thanks
bh

SQN, but they're about 3000 pounds new.

I have an ASC Minx, which you can often find on ebay for 3-400... unfortunately any that are more than a couple of years old won't have a working phantom power capability as the batteries that power it are obsolete. It's not as good as the SQN, but decent enough for low-budget shoots.

There are some cheap (100-200 pounds) American mixers which are supposed to be OK, but they're made from plastic and look quite delicate whereas the SQN and Minx have solid metal cases and could probably survive a nearby nuclear explosion :).

The good thing about mixers is that the older ones are pretty simple internally, so as long as they've been looked after you can still get good sound out of one that's a decade or two old and probably fix it if it goes wrong. That's also one reason why SQNs are so expensive: buy one new today and you could well still be using it in 2025.

Yeah, you can probably rent a mike, cables and SQN for 30-50 pounds a day total... less if it's a long-term hire (week or more).
