Hello!
What do you guys think of the SONY DCR-VX1000? I know it is a bit old, but it is very reasonably priced and I can only spend $1000 on a camera. Is this one a good choice for a guy who is not a professional but wants good looking footage?

It's not bad, but you'd probably want to check how many hours it's been used for: I believe Sony heads are normally expected to last about 1500-2000 hours before replacement. The main downside is that it can only record 32kHz audio, though that will be good enough for most uses.
