Hey, Im making this film for my A level and in it I want to have a shot of a glass falling down in slow motion and then smashing on the floor, shards being thrown everywhere ... maybe even the glass has water in!

My questions to all you lot!!!

What is the best surface to get a good "smash" effect???
Can someone run through some health and safety things ... should there be a screen in front of the camera... how will the glass smashing? In a small area, wide, shards going up? Etc What measures should I take!!

Also, what the hell will a glass full of water being dropped on the ground and then smashing look like???

Thanks, looking forward to all of your responses!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to filmmaking.net!

The best surface is a hard one. Cement, brick, pavement.
A rocky beach would look nice.

I'm sure you can figure out what is safe and what isn't.
Eye protection, skin protection (maybe a heavy jacket
and gloves), head protection. But you've thought of all
that so I'm not sure what you're asking.

The great thing about video is it's cheap enough to experiment
with. Fill a glass with water, turn on the camera and drop
the glass. I imagine it would look something like an explosion
of glass and water.

they also make cool breakable glasses out of sugar. you can probably buy them on the internet.

Unfortunately, sugar glasses won't hold water long. Use real glass, and use appropriate measures to keep from getting it in your eyes, or cutting your fingers when cleaning up. I suggest you use a very thin walled glass. Thick tumbler type glasses won't break reliably. Your frame rate will have to be about 75 fps (at least) to get a good effect. If the glass is transparent, be sure to add a "kicker" light so that you get some light passing through the shards.
