Basically, a scene in the film I'm shooting soon includes a shot where a man named Captain John Robinson smashes an alcoholic's bottle of whisky on a kitchen worktop.

Does anyone know how I can achieve this without spraying my nearby actors with sharp shards of glass?

I may be mistaken but I do believe they have bottles that are meant for that reason at joke stores and other places like that.

Ahh yes, but I live in a fairly rural area and I don't really want to buy another prop. Are there any other tricks to do this?

Do a closeup of the counter and smash the bottle in frame (with the smasher wearing glasses or safety goggles or something it should be pretty safe). That way the actors can be in another state for safety sake. Then shoot the wide angle or midangle stuff to show the movements and everything and cut it together. Smash the bottle first so you can use the remains of the bottle in the later cuts and have it match if necessary.
