please tell me how i can do silhouette shoot using canon XL1.i wanted to do a beach shoot in which i wanted the charectors to be in silhouette.how do i do this? please guide me

The short answer: back-light. You schedule your shot so that you are pointing the camera towards the sun, with the sun low on the horizon-- obviously early morning or later in the evening. Then you compose the shot so that your actors are between your camera and the sun, in effect blocking the sun from shining directly down the lens.
Then from there, all you do is play with the exposure on your camera to get the appropriate level of silhouette that you're looking for.

Just make sure your not getting flare from the sun as well, you will need a lens.
