Hello,

In my upcoming short film I need to shoot a sunrise (Or reverse a sunset because sometimes it has more of a golden color) with trees. Now the problem is that this is a time lapse video so this would be shot for a long period of time. What I'm worried about is the exposure, will this be a big problem?

I have not gotten the camera I will be using for this shot yet so It will be some time before I will check the exposures myself by just going out and testing it a couple times.

I have thought about changing the exposure to auto and let it record like that but once the sun is out, wouldn't the trees get way too dark because the exposure it is pointed and set to the sky?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I would consider setting the exposure manually. The reason being is because you'll be able to create a nice silhouette of the trees or other objects you're shooting in the foreground. It will also help bring out the brilliant oranges, reds, yellows and blues in the sky. Similarly, as the sun sets the screen will become more and more dark, which will also provide you a good cut point once the shot fades to black (or near black).

I've done this shot recently for a documentary. The city was in the background and I captured the sun setting behind the city. I think it looks better than it would have if I kept the exposure setting on auto.

Just a thought.
