I think the fellow in the article puts too much emphasis on having the movie in theaters. It depends upon the movie of course (My Big Fat Greek Wedding started in a handful of theaters and word of mouth drew in people for nearly a year and they expanded the number of theaters) but I think a better distribution model is the one followed by the cheap American Pie sequels. That is go straight to DVD and use that money that you would spend on putting it in theaters into advertising so people know your movie is out there.
Yes there is something 'proper' about having your movie in theaters but I personally think although the big studios are dinosaurs they are very good at distribution and this guy is not gonna make a whole lot of money with this route although it might give him a lot of credibility.
Having said that the online distribution idea is not bad. He might even be able to cut a deal and sell it as a download through Amazon or Apple iTunes and despite what the article suggests NetFlix may still be an option.

tell me one thing if we go with the most used distribution that is handing the movie to distributor and wait untill he takes out his expenses + 30 or 35% is it a better option or going on the method which you told about americal pie?because what ever we will earn will go in the advertising and promotion to buy that dvd of ours.dont you think that will be much riskier + more low profits?
tell me your idea as i dont have knowledge about dvd sales
secondly as you said
"Having said that the online distribution idea is not bad. He might even be able to cut a deal and sell it as a download through Amazon or Apple iTunes and despite what the article suggests NetFlix may still be an option."
tell me how much normally these sites charge if a person gets a movie from these people like amazon and Apple iTunes
and moreover being a filmmakerhow much share will i have to give them?and what will be the facilities i will get?i personally think dealing with them will be lot more better as the world knows these sites instead of making my own site and even promoting it on internet.
what do you think?
at the please also tell me for my general knowledge a new movie released on dvd how much share a filmmaker get on dvd sales plus how much 1 dvd costs for the consumer?

I don't have the numbers you're asking for. My post was based on opinion and I haven't actually gotten my movie finished yet.
