Sony FX1 should just about be within that budget range.
Yeah
FX1 is looking best so far... what do you think about second hand cameras?

The only used camera I bought was fine, but they're always a risk (e.g. head wear, etc).
I would personally go for the Panasonic DVX100, as you can shoot at 25p, which looks a lot more like real film than the standard 60i frame rate which digital shoots at. It isn't HDV, but to the untrained eye, there isn't much between them if you have ample lighting when you view the end result on most screens / projectors.

If they're blind, perhaps :). You're talking 720x432-ish on DV vs 1440x1080 on HDV, that's a big difference for a projected image, if you have a decent projector!
That said, the DVX100 footage I've seen does look pretty nice for a DV camera.
The resolution difference is vast, but not everyone owns an expensive projector to view footage on, so until HD TV set's are commonplace on the market, the extra resolution is lost on the standard 720x480 res TV set.
The FX1 is a great camera, but if you are after that "film look" that everyone seems to be after, 25p is what you need!
Personally, I'm holding out for the JVC GY-HD100 or the Panasonic HDX100. HDV cameras with the option to shoot at 25p. Best of both worlds!

Not really. People looking for the horribly stuttery 'film look' in NTSC land shoot 24p, but in PAL there's nowhere near as much difference between footage shot on video and shot on film since it's a frame-by-frame conversion rather than duplicating fields.
The big difference between film and video in PAL is color and contrast resolution, not frame-rate. A video camera won't magically look like film just because you shoot progressive rather than interlaced.
Of course progressive doesn't magically make video look exactly like film, but it looks closer to film than interlaced does.
No one element of production or post production will instantly give you that film look, like just altering colour and contrast. In my opinion it's a mix of elements, one such being shooting 25p rather than 60i. There's definately a visible difference, and in my opinion that difference in image happens to look more like film than shooting interlaced does.
I think I should start a post on the debate between 60i and 25p, as it is a good topical area which a lot of people can't seem to agree on! ?;)?
