I use an Audio Technica ATR-55 SHotgun Mic, and I've asked this question before but couldn't find it in the forums.

What extension cable do I need to buy to use the mic with a boompole?

Thanks!

i am assuming that your problem is that your cable that is part of the mic is too short to reach all the way down a boom pole. If this is so, then you'll need an extension cable that has a female end on one side and a male side on the other. If you don't have a 1/4" adapter for your mic cable, then you'll need to get one. Basically what you will need is to get an adapter like this one

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062462&cp=&sr=1&origkw=1%2F8%22+to+1%2F4%22+adapter&kw=1%2F8+to+1%2F4+adapter&parentPage=search

and a cable like this one

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102947&cp=2032058.2032228.2032256&parentPage=family

and you might need this to go back into the camera

i'm not sure if they make an extension cable for just mini plug (1/8")

You should simply need an XLR cable. They are common to most audio equipment. Musicians and filmmakers use them. The cables are fairly cheap at Guitar Center and other musician stores (musicians are starving but everyone thinks filmmakers have money).

A few boom poles will have an XLR cable built in so you plug the XLR from the mic into the boom pole and a different XLR cable from the XLR plug at the bottom of the boom pole to your camera or mixing board. Other boom poles are simply poles that hold the mic and the cables are totally separate.

You my need male to male or female to female connectors depending upon the plugs.

So it depends upon which kind of Boom pole you are using. You either need an XLR extension cable, or an XLR extension cable. I'm not sure there is a third option but then again I don't know the Audio Technica ATR-55 SHotgun Mic so maybe it used another kind of cable and that's what is confusing you.

I'm just using a makeshift boompole, which is why im sorta confused.

I have the first item mentioned, it came with my mic. I have a cable that looks like the second item, but its no way 25-ft. I guess its just a smaller version.

So I plug my mic into the cable, and then wrap the cable around the pole, and then plug that loose end into my camera?

Thats what I figured I had to do, but do I need that third item at the end of the cable to plug into my camera?

I'm not good with technical stuff....

this mic has a cable built into it that has a 1/8" end, not an xlr end.

darkwolf, to answer your question...yes. You just plug the other end into your camera. If your camera has a 1/8" input, then you will need the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter so that you can go into your camera. If your extension cable isnt long enough then you'll probably need to get another one that is longer, but if its good for what you need, then keep it.

Sooo...sorry I'm just a little confused.

SO all I really would need to get is the 25 foot cable? That's the way I'm seeing it from my setup, I just want to be sure.

that's ok, simply you will need to connect the 25 ft. extension cable from the mic to your camera. If the mic is like the one in the picture, then it has a 1/8" end on the cable that is attached to it. So you will need a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to connect the mic cable that is attached to the mic with the 25 ft. 1/4" extension cable. then you will need a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to go from the extension cable back into your camera.

mic--->1/8" to 1/4" adapter--->25 ft. extension cable--->1/4" to 1/8" adapter--->camera
