For a film that I am wanting to shoot, I am thinking of buying one very nice camera and then renting another camera to help make sure I get the coverage I feel I will need. What kind of problems do I need to watch out for when buying a camera and then renting another. Do they need to be the exact same cameras or otherwise there would be problems with the way the footage works?

I am wanting to buy a pretty nice camera in the $4000 range, but the best camera I have found that I could rent in my area is an XL2. Does having cameras that are completely different from one another equal a bad thing?

Well having them shoot in the same frame rate is probably helpful. ALso you are gonna have to color balance them using same color. Beyond that I'm not sure.

Often in TV to save costs they use 35mm for main 16mm for 2nd and DVcam for coverage. Get the white balance the same and your editor should be able to take care of the rest.
