Hi there,
I'm a filmmaker from Wellington, NZ. I'm shooting a digi-feature in 2005 and am considering various formats for projection in the not-too-distant future. My question is: which camera projects better onto the cinema screen - the pd170 or the DVX100A?
Suppose one were to shoot a film with the DVX (in 24P mode of course) and then, after editing, take the miniDV master, dupe it up to DigiBeta, and, finally project the image onto a theater screen (via video projector). After all this effort, would the 24P look from the DVX still come across in the theatre?
I've seen a DVCAM film projected in the cinema that was shot on the 150, and the quality was not too bad, although definetely better when compared to plain DV projected. This would lead me to believe that as far as *projection* goes, the PD170 would outperform the DVX100A on the basis that it uses a lower grade of tape. Is my assumption correct?
Thanks,
David Morrah
Frankly, it's not the camera as much as the lighting and color correction.
Flip a coin - get either camera and then hire a very good DP. A great DP and gaffer will make Hi-8 look better than a mediocre DP and gaffer on 24pHD.
