i heard that a cheap way to get bullet hits, is to buy a 'paintball' that instead of being filled with paint, is filled with powder/dust and when fired from a paintball gun, will impact around the actor with a puff of dust andbits of the ball flyig outwards (not to shoot actors btw). this would be good for impact on dirt but probably wouldnt be soo good for impact on wood, due to lack of scarring on the wood.

does anyone know where to buy them (shippable to UK) and how much they cost?

ps you can also get ones filled with zinc/potasium so they giv of sparks on impact.

I suspect you make them yourself. Like an old cannon, anything you put down the barrel of a paintball gun is gonna come out when you fire it.

When I was younger I was in a paint-gun war where we used hollowed out eggs filled with flour as grenades. I can't help but think that idea might work in some way for filming. Instead of flour fill it with blood. Paint the egg so that it's not white. It might work. Of course you'd throw it, instead of firing it.

It's Zirconium that is used for sparks.

I use these and fullers earth filled capsules often. They are quite effective. Matt
Sweeney Special Effects has a great product called the "Sweeney Gun" specifically
designed to fire these filled capsules.

Check torpac.com under "special effects" for fillable capsules.
