Can anyone recommend a good quality miniDV model/brand? JVC? Panasonic? Sony?

All of the above :). To be honest, I've worked with just about every DV tape brand in existence, and never had a problem with any of them... the benefit of digital tape is that the 1s and 0s are either there or not there, so provided the tape is good enough to store them without dropouts it will work as well as any other (though possibly not be as robust over time or poor handling).

I mostly use Panasonic tapes for my own stuff, though I have a couple of boxes of Sony tapes that I need to use up soon.

Is there a difference between the Panasonic Master Quality tape and Panasonic Professional Quality tape? I read some about the dry-lubricant, is that a factor or just commerical hype?

I use only Panasonic Master Quality. I started with the Sony and the lubricant clogged the heads. I recently picked up a box of the Professional Quality and found no difference.

One thing I've heard and believe is to stick with one brand.

I've also heard claims that you should change brand regularly, because the heads are most likely to clog up if you shoot one brand for a long time and then switch :). That's effectively what I've been doing with my camera for years, and so far it's been fine.

I really wish the tape manufacturers would get together and make sure that their tape lubricants were compatible, so we didn't have to worry about this kind of nonsense.
