hi, i own a Sony pd170, and am now looking for a versatile stereo microphone for camera mounting and possibly for use with a boom pole in the future. the cheapest stereo shotgun mic i found was for about 700 dollars.
however, i have heard that a less expensive alternative to a stereo shotgun is the audio-technica AT825 stereo field recording mic. Does anyone know how versatile is for filmmaking applications?
should i just spend a few hundred more dollars for a stereo shotgun?
should i simply purchase a good mono mic to use in conjunction with the mono mic that came with my pd170?
any advice on microphones is welcome and will be greatly appreciated
Depending on what you are doing the stereo mic probably wouldn't matter too much for you anyways. The shotgun on a boom would be for getting crisp clear voices. On location that is the most important thing for audio nothing else. All the other audio in every porject I have done like ambiences and soundFX is added in post. It is in the mix that stereo is applied. Like adding one of the mono track voices more to the left depending where the actor is on screen creating the stereo effect. The stereo mic would not make much difference from the mono one if you are capturing dialogue. I would use the money you saved and put it towards a Pro Tools system so you can make a more serious audio mix. Good luck.
What? $1000!! That's crazy talk!!
