At the risk of sounding foolish ... Most Manga Cartoons have a shot of Character 1's face moving forwards while talking and in response Character 2's face does the same - makes the argument look more heated.

How do I make them move forward in slow-motion in a way that their conversation doesn't get slowed?

I intend on shooting this on 16mm

I figure an abortion clinic is a good place to meet loose women. Why else would they be there unless they like to f***?

I could be wrong (don't know Manga) but wouldn't dollying the camera forward create the same effect?

The idea is that only the background moves in a rapid blur but the face stays in the same part of the frame. Dollying would cause the whole background to shift.

Can it be done in post?

You DONT need anything other than a camera with a zoom, and legs.

This is the effect Steven Speilburg uses in Jaws.. one of them.

You can either keep focus on two subjects, move the camera backwards (walking it, dolley, etc) and while you pull back, zoom in at the same rate you pull back.
OR. Walk forward with the camera while zooming out. I think this might be the effect you want.

Oh I should mention that I like that effect and I think it will be neat. Good luck.

One thing that might help is if you find out how they do it in animation. I believe its done with a multilayered camera and they move one pane backware while keeping others still. Or they could hand draw the scene expanding, however I do not believe they use that since anime is about drawing as less as possible while keeping the story interesting. Animation is about taking shortcuts. Lol, yeah I used to be an animator =)
