Hi there,
I recently shot a short film in which the poor quality of the sound was an issue, so I'm looking at getting a Sennheiser and my head is now spinning from the large number of seemingly identical models.
Basically, I want something to mount on the camera (Canon XH A1), wireless, with multiple channels, durable, and with a lavalier mike. I THINK that what I want is the Sennheiser EW 112-p G2 set. Any input/other ideas?
Thanks!
The EW112pG2 set is nice. You need one for each actor speaking. So
if you have a scene with three actors you?re shelling out $2,400.
And you need an experienced mixer to monitor all three incoming
channels. Keeping the mic hidden yet away from clothing (muffled
pick up and rustling) can be quite a chore.
Mostly lavs are used for long distance or moving shots where a
boom isn?t practical.
It?s hard to know why your audio wasn?t good, but in general poor
audio is the result of the mic being to far from the actors. The
further away the mic is from the actors, the higher the volume
needs to be. The higher the volume, the more ?noise? you get.
Your goal is to have a very high signal to noise ratio - more
signal (the dialogue) less noise (the background). Even a very
good, expensive Sennheiser mounted on the camera will pick up a
lot of background ambiance because it?s far away from the actors.
You really should not be looking for a mic to mount on the camera,
but for a mic to put on a boom pole and held close to the actors.
