ok heres the deal. Right now i have a couple Sony Handycams. A Handycam is pretty much a basic home video camera with a flip screen. I have two because thats all i could afford a the time. But now i have a job and i have some money to spend. But the Xl2 and all those cameras are a little too high priced. So is there a camera a step above a basic vidoe camera and a step below an XL2. If not is there old but still decent camera around the price range of 1,000-2,000 dollars??? Thanks

Yes! The Sony vx2100 can be bought for under that if you research all the places to get it from. I have seen it as low as 1200. I have two and like them better thant the XL2! They have better customer reviews as well.

TRV900 was good and you should be able to get one used in that price range: however, it will be at least 2-3 years old, so it's potentially risky.
If you can wait two or three months, the HC1 may be a good buy:

It shoots HDTV as well as normal DV, so there's room to move up: in fact it should be better than the XL2 in most respects other than low light performance, progressive-scan shooting and lack of interchangeable lenses.
For a pure DV camera, the Canon GL2 may be worth a look: I'm not sure what they're selling for today, but you may be able to get one under $2000.
Edit: didn't realise the VX2100 was that cheap... in that case, that's worth considering too.
i found one for 989$ which is perfect. but i dont know if its a deal or if the camera really isnt that great. or can i trust the site. Here is the link:

Never heard of them, but they have a very low rating on resellerratings.com:
Here is the deal with the Vx2100 for that price. it is exactly the same you buy here, but they order them from overseas so you might be waiting a month or more for them. I would call or e-mail the company and make sure #1 that its format is NOT "PAL" and is "NTSC" and that it is in stock. If it is not in stock ask them the wait time and have them e-mail it to you in writing. If you can get this camera for that price...DO IT! I paid 3000 dollars each for mine because I needed them ASAP and had to buy them from a retail store.
A good place to get accessories for the camera is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

You should also check that you'll get all the standard accessories with the camera, like battery, charger, etc. Some companies remove them, offer the camera by itself for a stupidly low price, and then charge you stupidly _high_ prices for the accessories so you end up paying more than you would elsewhere.
Obviously a DV camera won't be much good without a battery to run it and a charger to charge the battery...
Oh, and don't forget, if it's a foreign camera odds are you have no warranty in America: if it goes wrong, you'll probably have to ship it abroad to get it fixed.
Ah, I just saw this thread on another site:

Doesn't look too good...
