OK, We have a seen were a guy walks into a science lab in antartica. In reality a guy in his snow suit walks into our basement in 80deg weather.

Anyway, obviously we have no antartica in the background when this chap walks in. I would like to have pure bright white light shine in the background when he walks in. How is this accomplished. We have a Cannon XL2 and I thought a white sheet, light and overexposurer might work. Any other ideas would be helpful.

Cheers,
ALex?:D?

Crank the AC to make it cold inside or get the guy to take a puff of a cigarette (off camera) and blow it out as he enters to possibly simulate the cold breath. You might also toss some snow (detergent?) in behind him and have him brush it off his shoulders. Don't forget the makeup, make the guys face pale and cheeks red and lips chapped if there was any exposure.

Ontop of all of that I'd put a Hawaii poster on the wall as contrast. Perhaps the poster flickers in the wind as the door is opened.

I love the your ideas and the ideas of the guy above me. I think remember subtle gestures people do. The body crunching the muscles together to stimulate heat, the hands rubbing together for warmth- avoid sweat if its 80 degree weather (unless it will look like melted snow). Just walked a bunch in the snow? Breathing is going to be heavy and gaspy as the throat becomes raw from the cold.

Don't forget your audio post too-- krioni there mentioned heavy breathing. But also keep in mind the actual sound of the wind blowing in hard behind him as he comes in and shuts the door.

I just worked on a pretty big fake-snow job, and they had the cotton batten, the soap-sud generator, and the potato flakes. Potato flakes might be a nice option for your situation-- cheap. Just don't get them wet! Pain to clean up. Also finely shredded white garbage bags are convincing snow too, but they're not the best thing to be polluting the environment with.

Another thing you can do is have your actor suck on some icecubes before entering. You should get the cold breath and it would look better than the smoke idea I had earlier.

Use a blue popcycle and you can get bluish lips in the process. THat might look really cold.

Have them sniffle a lot. Stomping your feet can warm you up.

A shot of a thermometer (taken in a meatlocker perhaps) showing the level really low.

And finally a line of dialogue saying "damn its' freaking cold!" to clear up any doubt.
