I have been wondering about recording the audio of a shot that frames one or more people in conversation which are quite a distace a away from the camera. Because it was a shot that covers not only the people but also the scenary there, having people holding the mic pole is not practical. So what are the alternatives to record the audio?

Radio mikes would be one option. Another would be to record the dialog seperately: if you can't see the actors' mouths clearly then it should be easy to drop the dialog on afterwards.

In some cases you may also be able to cheat the camera angles so that you can still get a boom in close enough.

Many thanks for the response. My first thought is to use a wireless mic...however, that would change the quality or perhaps the sound of the audio compare to a boom mic when it comes to editing. It would almost be nice if I can use the same mic or same type of mic through out the shooting. How are the professionals do it?

Or you could add roomtone in post, and re-record all the dialogue with the actors which is pretty much what they do out in Hollywood.
