Hey there! Need some ideas here.

Kronobotz 02 is my deepest work yet. But now I'm trying to come up with a way to do this:

Ok, I have this map of the world against a wall. Kevin looks at it.

And then, follows a shot of the map. The map is about 2 metres by 1 metre. And our camera view move in until Jerusalem is close up on screen.

This sounds easy and I've tried a few times but wasn't satisfied.

The best idea would of course be to scan the entire map and then perform the motion digitally. But this map is far too big to fit into a scanner.

So I tried taking a still picture of 6 megapixels. It looks good at first but by the time we get to Jerusalem, the resolution makes it illegible. The range is too big.

So I tried walking with a handheld camera to the map. But the closer I get to the map, the more the camera struggles to hold the focus because we go from normal filming to macro filming and the transition isn't smooth at all - we lose focus. And the motion gets more unstable along the way as small things come closer.

I tried using a dolly but the focus is impossible to keep up when we enter macro photography range. There's a half second or two before the camera finds the focus. And when things become that close, the motion is unstable.

Just zooming in didn't work because the zoom range isn't nearly enough.

What else can I try?

could you try doing it VERY slowly....would the focus hold then? Would it possibly with your editing software to speed up the scene so it looks normal?

One more time.... do it backwards. :>) Start with the sharp focus, pull back, then reverse the shot in editing.

The backwards idea sounds good. Another idea is use two (or three) stills. That way the focus can be controlledbetter and since they are pi tires of the same subject blending from one to the other may not be too difficult.

Marius got James Rogers to do the map effect, via layers in MAYA, I believe. Marius, I would be interested in seeing the shot, if you could post it...

Or, just cut to a close up.

Save time, trouble, hair-pulling.

God bless NLEs...
