How is this camera:
Sony HDV 1080i Handycam? Camcorder (HDR-HC3)
Has anybody used it before and has some information you would like to share?
Is it worth getting?

It's just fair in my opinion. I didn't like the lens and the one 1/3" CMOS sensor seemed inadequate for a good HDV image. The manual controls are poor - you can't adjust the shutter speed and the "Cam Control" dial in place of a focus ring made focusing difficult. And as usual with Sony cameras there is no mic jack so this camera is (in my opinion) useless for making movies.

If in Hollywood come see "dark crimes" at the Chinese Theater on October 7.

No mic jack? Really? Thank you for the information. I guess I should try another camera.

I still can't believe it doesn't have a microphone input jack. But you are right, there are various complaints to sony about the mic jacks.

Thank you for the information.

I have an HC1, which is essentially an HC3 with more manual controls and a mic jack (and, paradoxically, cheaper). Unfortunately, the HC1 has been discontinued but you may still be able to find it online somewhere. The CMOS sensor is certainly not great and low-light performance is particularly bad, but at a price point comparable to some prosumer DV cameras, it's quite a viable alternative. It's not the best picture quality you'll ever see, but it is stunning to work with when you're used to DV.

I own the pro version of that camera - the 100U. The 10U is only a fair camera. It's the only camera in that price range with XLR mic inputs - a big plus. The manual controls aren't very good - you can set the shutter speed or aperture, but not both; very strange. It has only one CCD and a poor lens - JVC trying to save money I guess. The HDV mpeg-2 compression is terrible.

Can you get an excellent image with it? If you have the skill and experience with lighting and composition - yes.

Are there any camcorders that will deliver excellent quality, that is 2000$ or lower?

No problem. Glad to help. There are three primary things to look for in a camera.

Three CCD?s - the bigger the better
Manual controls for the iris, shutter, focus and white balance.
A microphone input.

A great image is going to come in time. No camera will give you a great image right out of the box or rental house - not even a $250,000 Arriflex. The skill and experience of the DP, gaffer and crew contribute more to how good the image looks than the camera itself. Get what ever camera you can afford right away! Learn to use it, learn to use light, learn to work with the script and the crew, learn to work with actors - all of that is SO important. The sooner you start with that aspect of movie making, the better you will become.

You are going to outgrow whatever camera you get within a few years anyway - even if you got the HD100U or any other high end camera. I'm already looking for the next generation camera in that price range.
