A couple of films I've seen recently have made me scratch my head by the cinematography. One of these is alexander...near the end when he is dying, and everything is all red colour themed. Is this look achieved by some chemicals done when processing, or in post production with computers? Also the third Harry Potter movie has almost a dark fairy tale look to it. i think it's done by shooting on those over cast days, and having a decreased exposure..but I'm not sure. Anybody know about these?
Generally the look of any film is a combination of several things:
- lighting
- film stock
- exposure
- processing
- grading
- skill of all of the technicians involved from DP to lab guy)
For something like Alexander, it's probably a grading issue. For Harry Potter, there wouldn't be a simple answer. It will be a combination of all of the above.

What exactly is grading? Have you seen the part in Alexander which I'm talking about? It just blew my mind, such vibrant colours! Would it be possible for an independant filmmaker on a budget(using possibly mini dv) pull of similar looks in the movie like harry potter or 3, or the end part of alexander. I know it's nearly impossible to get it exactly the same, but just a similar look would lead me in the direction I'm aiming for. Thanks.
