How do I get the "informant" look?

I am quite confident some of the very talented people in this forum have either done this or know how to do it.

What I am looking for is the look when an interviewer has an informant. When the camera cuts to the informant it is dark shadowy. Not sure how to go about lighting or angles.

I can alter the voice of the so-called informant. One option I have is to blur the face of the subject but I do not think this will be as effective as the the subject in darkness.

Thank you in advance for any tip/hints you might offer.

Place the actor a few feet away from a white wall. Light the wall and set your exposure. Then lock the setting and place the actor in the shot. You can use a small light placed above and behind the actor - aimed at the back of his head - to make the silhouette a bit more pronounced.

If it's not exactly the way you want it change the exposure - open or close the aperture until you get the desired effect. Sometimes even a little light on the face will work - still keeping the subject in darkness, but adding a little detail.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I knew some one would have some specifics.

Thanks again.

Personally I would have a little light coming in real sharp from the side and a little to the back, which would light just the tip of the nose and the highlights, like maybe the chin and the eyebrows. If it's a dim enough light and you get your exposure right, I think it would be very cool.
