I think this was mentioned here about a year ago when Sony first started talking about this camera, but now they've released the specs and are planning to start selling them soon. While it has its limitations (mostly that it's highly compressed HD video on DV tapes), it looks like it may be a pretty good deal for shooting HDTV footage without spending a ton of money.

I don't know, is it really all they say it is? I'm in the market for a new camera, (one with XLR inputs on it) and I was considering the AG-DVX100, but i heard that the 24p looks cheesy. I don't really want to shell out for a XL-2, since i'm pretty happy with my GL-2.

Is HD that great though?

As a long time JVC user, I started shooting with the JY-HD10U just before it hit the streets.

Didn't like it. Frankly the HD image wasn't good due to compression. Really the only reason to shoot HD is for film transfers, and an image compressed that much didn't transfer to film well. I did a side by side comparison with my GY-DV500 and the final result was better with the standard MiniDv than with the HD.

For shooting for the DTV market, well lit and color corrected MiniDV is quite sellable.

I have a test shoot with the Sony booked in two weeks. If anyone is interested in my views, I'll post them.

I'm hoping JVC will soon announce their 3 chip HD camera.

Thanks... would be good to see some actual images from the camera and hear what you think of it.

HD is pretty awesome no question, but the specs on the new sony prosumer HDcam can only give the smallest amount of control over the HD medium and control is what's required to shoot HD. I've used the AG-DVX100 on many shoots and i never thought that the 24p looked cheesy. As a heads up though, if you are thinking about getting a dvx I'd definately consider the ag-dvx100A the newest version. the original 100 has a fake 16:9 production, but the 100A has the chip capable of a real digital squeeze 16:9. Just some thoughts....

What is the difference between the DVX-100A and the DVX-102AE. Also, for the DVX-100, is it wise to get a PAL model for easier film transfers, or would you go with a NTSC version?
