Hand Cranking?

Is is possible to get the effect of a hankcranked film on a dv camcorder, is there some setting that would record on different levels of film on a dv camera....if there is let me know because hand cranking is such a sick effect.....looks awesome on Man On Fire if you guys have seen that movie....thanks for the help....

I haven't seen Man on Fire, but I don't believe it's possible to duplicate hand-cranking with the DV camcorder itself. However, I bet you could do it in post production. Try taking a look at Adobe After Effects. You can find a large number of tutorials on the web, probably including one for exactly the effect you're looking to duplicate.

Here's one on using the shutter option on AE:

Maybe you can get an idea if this could be used for the effect you want.

Actually, I thought about it a little more and you might want to use After Effects' time remapping feature to simulate hand-cranking. There's a tutorial on it here:

Glad I could help. I'm amazed at the things you can do in post with After Effects. Since the editing packages like FCP and Premiere have most of the plug-ins nowadays, I think that many people think they don't need AE. On the contrary, it does so many things so well, it's a must-have for advanced visual work.

Thanks for buying the book! You can download a bunch of the templates for items in the book on the web site. I should have a sample film budget spreadsheet and the slate template up by next week.
