I'm gonna shoot a scene where a character gets shot 5 times in the chest and stomach. I really want to show the horror of it and not use any shortcuts. Anybody with experience with this kind of stuff?
I want show his shirt getting holes in it and the area around getting red. 3-4 shots all in one take and real time.
I know about the technique with firecrackers... but does this really work... and how?

thanks

Firecrackers placed against the actors body and lit with a match can cause great harm. You have no way of controlling when they fire and even a little bit of tape to secure it to the actor can cause the firecracker to explode with more force than you (or the actor) expects.

One can be extremely dangerous. Three or four....

A little trick I?ve used:

Thread a length of fishing line through a small button with a needle. Carefully punch the needle through the inside of a condom so the button is inside. A drop of latex will seal the tiny hole the needle made.

Fill the condom with blood and seal it.

Attach the condom to a heavy (but small) piece of cardboard with super glue or liquid latex. With a bit of twine, tie this cardboard backing to your actor.

Now score the costume where you want the blood to fly. Thread the fishing line through the costume and set up your shot. When you yank hard on the fishing line, the button will pull out of the condom and the blood will spray.

Had a longer post but then realized Instigator said much of the same thing so I've edited down a bit.

Fill an insecticide sprayer with fake blood and run the tubs up under the shirt of the victim. Tape them in place. Score the shirt. Pump up the sprayer and on que release the pressure so the sprayer sends a jet of blood. There is a website that details how to do this with video samples.

CGI and compositing a bloody explosion onto you actor.

Personally I intend to use a combination of the fishing pole method, the insecticide sprayer and CGI. Timing the firecrackers and the safety issue is too much hassle for my low budget needs.

This fishing wire way has been used in big movie too. One that I remember is The Hills Have Eyes (2006). In the making of they showed how they shot a mutant in the neck using the fishing wire method. It looked very convincing and real to me, so if you do it right it should come out great.
