Simply racking (changing) the focus...if you have manual focus controls on your camera. Does your camera allow manual focus?

Yeah Im going to be using a Cannon XAH1. Its for the production of a drama, I know it to be a device used to cause tension amongst your audience, but Im not sure what the technique is called?

Cheers Cleary.

Describe what you are trying to accomplish by going in and out of focus. If it's a POV shot from a character then it can have an impact on the audience...the audience sees what the character sees...which is blurred vision caused by alcohol, drugs, concussion, on-the-verge of passing out or death, etc.

Describe the impact you want (tension) and describe the scene where it will be used.

Just toggle off the autofocus on the xha1, then find the ring on the front of the xha1 that controls focusing. One ring is for zoom, another for focus, another for f-stop (iris). I have an xha1 also; I use it on manual mode mostly, I do not like autofocus or autoexposure.
