hi all,
i was taking a photograph of my dad who was wearing dark blue and white striped shirts. The shirt came out to be very distorted in the photograph. I think this happens with all striped shirts which has a dark and light colour combination.
Why does this occur?
What are the remedies?
Thanks in Advance..
Hi, the best remedy is to have subjects not wear striped or high contrasting clothing.

This has to do with the way pixels are arranged on digital image sensors. Because the pixels (photosites) on digital sensors are arranged in a straight grid, they produce a moir (aliasing) pattern when confronted with many small, high-contrast patterns. Think of it like looking at a complex pattern through a window screen. Because red, green and blue are arrayed side-by-side, this moir is often rainbow-colored.
Film, because its active silver particles are positioned at random rather than in a straight grid, does not have this problem.
Solution: if you're shooting digital, avoid high-contrast patterns. If you have the option, do a camera test of all costumes and sets you'll be shooting. If you find yourself in a situation where you have no choice but to shoot a moir-causing pattern, you can rescue the image by throwing the shot a little out of focus. You'll sacrifice some sharpness, but at least you'll prevent the distracting patterns.
