I am needing to do a shot in my film where i need to shoot a news reporter in the street. How do i get it filmed without people walking about in the background? Do i put up a sign or something because i saw them do that in a 'making of' video.

You can't prevent people from walking down the street in the UK unless you have police permission to shoot there: otherwise you can ask them not to, and hope they're feeling nice.
