Does anyone know a way besides digital special effects to show someone's breath?

Freeze the room. AFAIR that's what they did for 'Exorcist'.

IMO I think AFAIR is an abreviation too far 😉 It shouldn't be allowed.

Back on topic, thinking about this one again I seem to remember the commentary track of one movie I watched talking about how they had the actors hold ice cubes in their mouth before the shot to cool their breath down so that it condensed in the air. Dunno if it will work, but it may be worth a try.

But isint it you hot breath that condenced in the cold air not the other way around?
The only way I can think of is to shoot outside on a cold day or else cool the room your shooting in down.

The Ice cubes cause the tempature inside of your mouth to decrease hence allowing your hot breath to condense and be seen as it's leaving your mouth. It's Crude, but never the less effective.

Usually when an actor is chewing on ice cubes, it's because the cameras are already reading the actor's breath. Usually you use that ice chewing thing on night scenes, shot in October, that are supposed to be taking place on a balmy August night. In Hollywood, whenever we've wanted to see the actor's breath, we always cool down the stages. It could work opposite, but I've never seen it done.
