Hey guys! anybody know how did David Fincher get that dark look in the fight club and in se7en? Is it lightning, post production? selection of dark looking places? or basically everything mixed in? Filters?
i don't know how he did it, but you could mimic it using 'magic bullet' software in post.

is a MAGIC BULLET amature type of software , meaning anybody can use it? or is it a harded process? The reason im asking this is to figure out if one uses this software and sends his movie to some movie festival will they look at it and say ok this isn?t original at all or will they treat it as normal part of editing?
I thought the look was simply the lighting. It has been a while since I saw either movie so maybe i'm misremembering something.

i also think it is the lighting, but i?m new to all of this so i don?t really know lol... But from looking at the movie.. SE7EN has lots of low light conditions and FIGHTCLUB as well but in Fightclub there is a lot of those RUSTY look walls and stuff like that..
3 Kings and Saving Private Ryan are examples where their distinctive 'looks' were done using the 'bleach bypass' system in post... its a method of developing the film...

Oh i know what you're talking about both movies have that look ( i love the look of saving private ryan if i?m not mistaken "band of brothers" also has similar look... Ourkid do you know if this effect can by recreated by software?
Yes, it can be achieved in software. Here is a link on how to do it in After Effects: ?url? http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=1&postid=855123?/url?. If your using someother program just google it.
magic bullet does it too.

seven's look was modified in post (this is explained in the commentary of the special edition dvd) by processing the negative twice to allow the black to soak in (they explain it much better). most films use digital intermediate (basically photoshop for film) to adjust color, framing, etc., but they start with something good to begin with.
there's a featurette on the panic room dvd that shows exactly what they can do with digital intermediate. we use it for all of our commercials and it definitely helps, but there's no subsitute for a well shot image to begin with.
you should start with good lighting, knowledgeable crew, good film stock, good sets, etc. from there, the picture will only get better, but don't expect post to take a flat, boring image and make it look like seven.
