Hi i am making new action film. I have lots of help creating bullet hits (thanks to everyone) but still need help with this:

Does anyone know any ways of creating smoke/steam for both atmospheric scenes and a pipe bursting.

Is renting a smoke machine the best or cheapest way or has anyone tried dry ice. Both of these scenes are indoors. Is CGI the best route to take?

i would appreciate any coments or links to good sites.

Well if your gonna do an action movie without using any effects software then thats gonna be a big problem. If you have an NLE such as Vegas than you can use stock footage from a site like www.detonationfilms.com , which offers you free stock footage. Just change the composite method to screen and move the effects to the right position.

Other than that the only other way is just take a couple firecrackers and put them in the right places and hope they explode at the right time ?;)?.

Dont you have an editing program to cut your film? I think almost all programs like that can change the composition mode and if you dont im sure you can find a free editing program out there, it prbally wont be great but its better than nothing.

I do but the effects do not look realistic and i would much prefer yo do it for real. Does anyone know about doing bullet hits using compressed air, bangers or pumps.

What about smoke effects (not CGI)

If you go to the detenation films website, they also have some tutorals for smoke, fire etc...some do it yourself stuff that is not too dangerous.

If you do a google search "special effects" you can find some compressed air tricks and tips.

Only in some shots CGI smoke would look real, you would have to very carefully light the scene. It would be better to use dry ice.

These threads make me feel old and out of touch.

I remember the day when a filmmaker would rent a smoke machine
for$100 for a week and actually use real smoke on set. Now all you
young bucks use computers for rain and smoke and blood.

I'm gonna pull the shawl around my neck and crawl back into
my easy chair....
