Hi guys. I've been looking to buy my first prosumer camera and after a ton of research, i've narrowed it down to three; the canon gl2, sony vx2100, and panasonic dvx100 (not 100a). i will be shooting mainly short films and flips (kinda like gymnastics). so, any information on these cameras would be much appreciated = ?. thanks for your time = ?.

If you can afford it, go for the panasonic. It shoots 24p (which looks the most like film) and has xlr audio imputs on the body, the other two cams don't have these two very important options. so they just don't add up to it. the only prob. is the panasonic is a little more expensive.

actually i found that the dvx100 was about the same price as the vx2100 = ?. the only reservation i have about the dvx100 is that its quite a bit older than the gl2 or vx2100, but i dont know if that makes a big difference. the 24p mode would be nice, as would the xlr ports, but i can always put an adapter for the xlr ports, and i probably wouldnt use 24p super often, although both would be nice to have. i dont know, it just seems a little scary buying an older model hahah.

do you know some of the weaknesses that the dvx100 has that is fulfilled in the other models?

"do you know some of the weaknesses that the dvx100 has that is fulfilled in the other models?"

The main weakness would be that Canon (not certain about Gl2) tend to have a nice array of interchangable lenses. If you have access to lenses and are likely to use them that could be a big plus. You can add a wide or telephoto lens to the DVX100 but not much beyond that.

I have a DVX100 and haven't found the need to use any lenses beyond the built in one and a wide angle. This really goes down to style and availability of lenses.

The GL2 dosen't have the option of interchangeable lens system. It comes on the xl1, xl1s, and xl2. Also the GL2 has a defect. There are many cases of the tape deck jamming, and the motor going out. Its a prob. that costs around $300 to fix

As for the AG-DVX100A, theres nothing work with it as a result of it being an older model. More time and resreach was put into it, and when the other two cams came out they still couldn't top it. If that still bugs you though, these a new ver. of the AG-DVX100A out soon for about the same price. Its called the AG-DVX100B.

actually cameron, i'm talking about the even older dvx100, no a hahah. anyways, i think i made a decision. i decided to splurge even more than i was planning and go with a xl1s. its got better low light performance than the vx2100, interchangle viewer and lenses (plus with an adapter, i can use my lenses from my rebel xt on the xl1s) and has many more physical buttons to change settings as opposed to menus. also, it will allow me to use slow shutters which the dvx100 wont. the only problems are that it doesnt come with XLR ports, which is no big deal because i can buy the adapter, and no 24p mode, which is also no big deal because i dont really care if it has that more filmy look to it.

plus, the xl1s has alot more freedom than the gl2 and vx2100, which both have issues with changing all the settings. so i think that the xl1s is the best route i can take right now.

i am, however, still looking for opinions. is the xl1s the right choice? yes? no? what instead? thanks for all the help so far guys!

I was sold on the Xl1 once upon a time. Good camera, and the full frame rate can mimic 24p from what I've heard.

I eventually decided extra lenses were too expensive and I was unlikely to use them, and I wanted real 24p so I went with the dvx100a.

One other thought. The XL1 looks more like a pro camera. This means guerrilla shooting can be harder to get away with.
