my whole life ive wanted to make movies, for a year i even walked around with a video camera recording anything..but my dream is to be a director. im going to be attending los angeles film school which looks like a great school but i dont have clue what the hell i would be doing after that. what should i do and how could i use film school to my advantage to get where i want to be..
If you are going to film school my suggestion would be to absolutely make the most of everything. No coasting or ignoring something because its old technology. Meet people and make contacts since networking is a huge part of it, and don't feel that the required films are the only ones you should do, if you can make cheap ones with your camcorder you should continue to do so.
Oh that and have a lot of money to start with because costs skyrocket when you have to make the student films.

Another thing to do is find a partner. Someone you get along with whos skillset compliments yours. You want to direct, do you write? You might find someone who only wants to write and otherwise is easy to get along with. Perhaps someone who likes the Producing side of things or cinemtography. Its helpful to know all this stuff but it can be even more beneficial to be able to concentrate on direction if directing is where you are certain you want to go.

i agree with everything RJ said. In particular i would say dont only make movies when your assigned too. Make movies constantly, summer break, winter break, and whenevr you get a free chance. Good Luck!
just curious, what school is it?
"Anyone who has ever been privileged to direct a film also knows that, although it can be like trying to write 'War and Peace' in a bumper car in an amusement park, when you finally get it right, there are not many joys in life that can equal the feeling." - Stanley Kubrick

I had the privledge of visiting LAFS and found it to be a great school. Although film school wasn't really for me, seeing as how you are just beginning into the industry and have a lot to learn, it will be a great experience. The one thing about film school is you are around many other filmmakers, MAKE CONNECTIONS! That is the best advice I can give you. Good luck! The school is great and I know you will learn a lot!
