Brian,

I would say, more likely, nine out of ten visitors to this forum DID think twice about the grammar and proper language of the original post and chose for the moment to ignore it and give the original poster a little latitude. Nonetheless, they most certainly noticed poor effort on the poster's part.

As has already been said, intelligent people (i.e. those who might provide valuable answers to a question and valuable opinions in a discussion) respond much better when they can recognise that an effort has been made to write out an intelligent question or thought.

The 'texting culture' literacy theory simply does NOT apply to discussions about literature, poetry, philosophy, art OR film(making). These subjects by default REQUIRE articulate communication and very high proficiency in the language of communication (in our case, English).

If there are any grammatical faux pas in my writings, please forgive, as English is not my mother tongue (and I only started learning it in my teens).

Despite the angered response, I DID in fact answer the original question. I am more than "forgiving" of incorrect grammar/spelling in some circumstances, particularly when I know that the author is not a native English speaker. 🙂

But when someone A) asks how to communicate with Actors B) in a way that is not indicative of good communication skills, then it is more than relevant to address those issues. Sure, one could choose to ignore poor communication, but when the question itself is in regard to communication, then the poor grammar/spelling becomes part of the response. 🙂

isn't this what the audition process is for?

give them the script, and tell them what scenes to prepare.

from the auditions, you'll know how they'll play it.

This is only partly true. An actor may give you a brilliant audition, this is no indication of how well he/she can act or work with others or take direction. Some actors are "solo performers" they play a scene brilliantly by themselves, but fail to engage with others or take cues or listen and respond, worse still, they may not take direction when it is at odds with their fixed ideas. Beware the brilliant performance at audition, it may be a gift from heaven, but it may instead be a Fairy gift from hell.

This is a very valuable article. It goes directly to the heart of the matter and is very informative.
