Hi Guys,

can anyone help me please. I'm using a XM1 (GL1 IN USA) with a steadicam system. My question is how do I pull focus manually whilst using the steadicam? How do the pro's do it?
I've worked on some tracking shots using auto focus and it looks terrible with the focus all over the place!

I'd be really appreciative of any advice.

Cheers Guys

Chris

Hey Chris... that's me. I'm a pro. And the problems that you've run into with autofocus are the reason I can still make a living guessing distance for money.

With steadicam I use a radio controlled remote focus which allows me to adjust focus without touching the camera and thus wrecking the balance of the steadicam (although they are balanced so precisely that a good steadicam operator will notice a weight shift as I rack from 3 feet to infinity, especially with the heavy pro lenses we use). The only thing that I can think of suggesting to you is to set a frame and then focus on that distance, turn off autofocus, and try to keep the same head size.

You may be able to get a pro lens that has been outfitted with gearing for focus motors. Then you only need get your hands on a Preston, Microforce, Bar-tec or other similar focus device and Bob's your uncle.

"On a good gate, that's a wrap."
